So, it was -51°C (-59°F) this weekend. I’ll let you digest that while I talk about insignificant things.

Christmas

For some reason, I’m not really in the Christmas spirit this year and I’m not too sure why. Actually, it’s probably fatigue again, so there’s not too much I can do about that. There’s a nice layer of snow on the ground, though, and once it stops being ZOMG COLD, it’ll be, um, Christmasy? Just that it’s not really doing it for me this year.

Computers

I got Windows 7 up and running again, but I still haven’t installed a decent virus scanner. Need to do that sometime today, lest I get smacked with malware again. I finally settled on trying Kaspersky because of the three license package — if someone thinks I shouldn’t, please please please comment here before I spend $60.

I’m pretty happy with my computer. I have a newish processor, lots of memory, more hard drive space than I can shake a stick at, a niceish video card (not the fastest, but it had 1 GB RAM), and two sexy 22″ screens. My main bottleneck is my motherboard, whose USB ports seem to be spazzing out in spectacular ways (from giving me errors in Windows to making my keyboard go insane).

I don’t want to rush into getting a new motherboard without doing lots of research — I’m not sure if it’s worth it to get a socket 775 motherboard anymore. It “works” now, but if I upgrade anything on my system anytime soon, it’ll be that.

FFXI

Aww yeah. I managed to get WAR 30, SAM 29 (hasso~) and BLU 29 recently. I’m at DRG 54 and a hair away from 55, but I’m a little undergeared at the moment.

However… I’ve entered the realm of dual-boxing.

I’ve always wanted to play Ithan-Yuran as a seperate character, and I took the plunge last weekend and signed up for a separate account. It’s a little awkward to control, but I seem to have ironed out the bugs so far. I… just need to find the time to level the little bugger.

Right now, I’m having issues because I level him while I’m doing Chocobo Races with Dar. Not having a subjob is pain incarnate, and I have to rest after each fight. Once I’ve got my racing silks, then I should be able to work on him. I also need to do a bunch of fame things with him, and get his subjob, and… argh. This is material for another post, really.

Got busy here, so I’ll make a separate post later when I can gather my thoughts. @.@

The Globe and Mail (which is quickly becoming the National Enquirer of national newspapers) has an article about the “new” French spellings that France has been pushing on us for years that will now become “standard” in Quebec.

The circumflex accent would be dropped from the i or u in some words: une île becomes une ile, une flûte is une flute. Other words lose their hyphen, so that le ping pong becomes le pingpong and un extra-terrestre becomes un extraterrestre.

As for oignon – the i is silent – its spelling dates to the Middle Ages and is considered archaic.

Borrowed words that have passed into the French language, such as referendum, would be francified and written référendum – something that is already common practice in Quebec, where there has been plenty of practice.

“Ognon”. Jesus.

Let’s just make an absolutely AWESOME day even more AMAZING with this charming little news blip. P.S. It’s opposites day.

http://www.cbc.ca/technology/story/2009/12/17/tech-santa-unhealthy.html

Santa is promoting an unhealthy lifestyle of overeating, drinking and lack of exercise, says an Australian academic.

Published in this week’s British Medical Journal, public health researcher and study author Nathan Grills of the University of Melbourne says childhood obesity, teenage smoking and infectious disease outbreaks could in part be blamed on the jolly old man in red.

Yeah, I’ve got nothing.
