I’d say that things can’t possibly get any worse, but that’d be tempting fate.

The long and the short of it is that our insurance company has denied our claim because they claim that the water didn’t come from our sump — that it came from seepage, and they don’t cover that. They refused to look behind the stairs, at the still-damp spots leading behind the storage room, etc. It’s actually possible, but it’s the fact that they won’t cover it that pisses me off beyond belief. Fuck you, Intact, seriously.

So I’m on my own… sorta. Myrna and Ire helped us rip out the carpet tonight, so now I’m left with bare concrete flooring. After ripping out some of the baseboards myself and peeling back the carpet, it was painfully obvious that there was no way in hell the underlay could be salvaged — it was soaked all the way down — so we garbaged it. And given all of us but Sky have severe allergies to mould, we decided it wasn’t worth the risk and ripped everything out. We’re set up upstairs now (I’m in the spare-spare with Reese, Sky’s in the spare) with full intarwebs and everything. Even my wireless works.

Now I face the following obstacles:

1. If it is seepage, we need to see if there’s something we can do. There are apparently services that will put some kind of foam fibreglass between the slab and the foundation, but I don’t know the costs. It’s something to look into, anyways.

2. Wait until the concrete dries. We’re estimating about three days for that.

3. Take out the nail strips that were holding the carpet down. Once those are gone, we can let the cats down there again and air out the whole basement further.

4. Buy more flooring. I know this might happen again, but if I’m going to be screwed no matter what flooring I put down, I might as well put down stuff I like and that won’t give me allergies, so Tundra flooring it is. This WILL cost less than the library and the kitchen if only because we already have all the tools we need, and we have some flooring and underlay left over. Still, I really don’t have the money for this right now…

5. Move the fish tank. You don’t move a 600 lb. tank on a whim. Need to figure out how to do that/board the fish/etc.

I’m on vacation mid-August so that’s when it’ll be done. Sky thinks we should repaint as well but I’m not so sure — there are a few repairs we need to make on the walls, though.

Anyways, that’s where I’m at. Someone remind me why I have insurance again?
