Believe it or not, I did take a couple weeks off playing the game, but that was mostly because I had become incredibly sick and tired of making a bow.
Allow me to explain under the cut.
There is a Tempering FAQ out there that goes into great detail on the ins and outs of tempering. I understand maybe about a quarter of this crap. There is a complete recipe in there that uses a Sacred Bow, a rare drop from Chobin Hoods, that will result in a 815 offence Dior Wood bow. Well, I happened to get that Sacred Bow, and I set out to actually make the stupid thing just to see if I could. (I’m not a bow person.)
Load that FAQ and CTRL+F to “Sacred Bow”. Yeah. It took me FOUR DAYS.
After I was done, I admired my handiwork by repeatedly obliterating small fuzzy creatures, and then I came to the realisation that I still need to restart the game to get the level 3 shop I so horribly flubbed getting.
I mean, I don’t have to do this. I could always cheat and refresh my save from 2000. But it wouldn’t feel right, and the lack of a level 3 shop would nag me forever.
So I need to restart. However, I have weapons that can obliterate galaxies. How do I make this interesting for myself?
Well, I could restart from scratch. No uber knives, no uber flail, no super-uber bow. I’d lose all my progress. I could transfer my weapons back to myself, and I could try for a close-to-perfect stat spread, but I don’t relish the idea of losing 70 hours of work. Besides, here are my stats.
No, it’s not perfect. But too perfect and it’d look weird, so I’ll take this.
I am playing in No Future Mode, which means that all enemies are level 99 with beefed up attack and defence. This is challenging if you’re level 40-ish with a weapon with less than 300 offence, but the weapons I have, plus armour with amazing defence, regenerative properties and complete status immunity, I’m not too worried (unless I’m fighting Lord of Jewels 999 and get hit for half my HP in one blow).
So what if I went through No Future mode with a crappy weapon?
The base weapons — weapons made with materials you get in the game — are amazingly crappy. No stat bonuses, no essences… they’re blank slates that are ready to receive whatever you want to temper into them.
It also takes me a few minutes to defeat an enemy with a base weapon.
So I posted the following on Twitter:
And I got:
*sigh*
So, looks like I’ll try doing an unmodified run with gloves. I’ve never used gloves, not even with 2000!Keith. I don’t have a single tech.
As before, I’ll be following this guide. I’m frankly expecting issues starting at the first boss, but we’ll see what happens. Feel free to set conditions on me, but I WILL be using my immunity pendant and my regen armour. The armour may harm more than help — sure, I can regen, but if I die, I have to reload from a save (no coming back to life). If I feel ambitious, I’ll chronicle it here.
So I’ll go to Leires to beat up Chess Knights and try and get an Adamantite (it’s the best material for gloves — I’m not going to make this harder on myself than it really has to be), and I’ll finish up any outstanding growing I need to do… and I’ll (ulp) start anew with this weapon I have no idea how to use.
