What a weekend! Let’s recap what happened. Here’s post 1 of 2 since I’m covering four days.

Friday:

Met up with Myrna and Sky at Heritage Century Park, after which we decided to go for Pho because, well, we were hungry (I was hungry”ish”, but that’s because hot weather kills my appetite). Turns out that the restaurant was closing for its yearly two-week break starting today, so it’s a good thing we went then. Had some salad rolls and a quarter of my noodle bowl which ended up going to the guys.

Then we went to Ikea to get the flooring. I was waffling on getting the flooring because I didn’t want to bug my dad, but I decided to get it over with and pick up 10 boxes and two of their equaliser thingers. Walked out $600-something poorer. Anyways, we went back and my dad helped us bring everything in — while he was doing that, I ninjaed him a Timmy’s gift card (bwahahaha).

By the time we got everything in, we were hot (and bothered) and we so totally didn’t want to start on the second coat for the walls, so we played Dragon Quest IX all evening long in the library, and we liked it.

Saturday:

Got woken up at 6:15 am by the cats. Woke up Myrna at 6:50 am (hey, you’re the one who asked for it); Sky got us A&W breakfast and we started on the painting. Halfway through, we realised that we wouldn’t have enough paint, so Sky went to get some more, and an air compressor and a shop vac from Home Despot while Myrna and I continued painting. Turns out we didn’t need the extra paint YET, but we still hadn’t painted the section behind the fish tank, so we’dve needed it anyways. (The 4th can, though… bah, I’ll probably paint the stairwell eventually.)

After that was done, we moved everything to the “TV/couch” side of the room and went to the AMA (needed to renew my plates) and Bonton Bakery (mmm, chocolate croissants) to kill time while the paint dried. Then we played a bit more Dragon Quest IX (shush) and got started on the floor at about noon.

It started off slow, but after the first few cuts, we sped along. I think we stopped at around 4 pm, about two rows before the column, which was about where we wanted to stop as this was past the point where I needed the flooring down to move the aquarium. We took a break to get some baseboards from Home Despot, where we waited half an hour so we could cut everything in Echo Hatchback bits (they had a deck event going so everyone was using the self-serve thing). Then we got home, ordered a pizza, played more Dragon Quest, and ate.

Where the guys busted their backs getting the flooring in and I kinda just sat there cleaning up and providing potable quenchables to them, there was nothing they could really do while I took care of the aquarium. I got all the fish out (eventually) and drained all the water, and then I removed the 60 lbs. of gravel I had in there. Once that was done, the guys moved the tank to its new home… and it didn’t break. WOO! So I cleaned out the filter (while Sky put back the gravel), started filling the tank, and then had the bucket lifted while I pulled the clear garbage bag I’d been using as a fish bag (common tactic) from the bucket…

… and it ripped and sent all the fish flying into the bucket.

All I could do at that point was put the fish in (water temp was 76°F, bucket temp was 75°F, not a big deal), but the fish were clearly in shock. There wasn’t anything I could do at that point, so we ripped out the nail spike/baseboard/carpet and put the primer down, and went upstairs to play Dragon Quest IX and relax (with me feeling like crap the whole time).

Sunday and Monday recap coming later on today, plus pics! (No, not of the fish.)

Good: We got halfway done the flooring yesterday, and let me tell you that it looks fricking GORGEOUS. We’re more experienced after having put down the library and kitchen flooring, and thius looks polished and perfect. We shouldn’t have any problem finishing today, and we might be able to get some baseboards in.

Bad: We moved the aquarium — even completely empty, we had a 50-50 chance of it breaking due to to it having been there for 7 years and the pressure from everything. We actually managed to move it, so that’s not the bad. No, the bad was that as I was pulling out the thick clear garbage bag I was using as a fish bag out of the bucket, it RIPPED… sending the fish crashing down 6-12″ back into the bucket.

I mean, it could have been worse — the bag could have ripped while I was transferring it to the tank, and destroying the floor. But this isn’t much comfort as…

Ugly: … all the fish were dead come this morning, save for my pleco and my two clown loaches.

This is going to sound amazingly stupid, but I’m having trouble playing FFXI, even though I’m set up as I should be (two monitors, G11 keyboard, mouse, etc.)… because I’m not sitting at the same place as before.

For some reason, I just don’t feel centered and it’s driving me up the proverbial wall. I’d say it’s unfamiliarity, but I used to use that desk before, darnit, so it makes no sense. Maybe it’s my inner child having a massive tantrum because I don’t have the same coloured ball I used to have? I dunno.

We’re fast-tracking the basement plans, filling in holes on Friday, and if the caulking’s dry, starting to prime over the weekend. I’m actually thinking we might not need my dad’s SUV to grab the flooring since we only need 12 boxes; I’d almost rather buy six or so boxes to start (which fit in my little dinky hatchback) and see how much we’ll need afterwards, because I’d really rather not have tons of leftovers like last time.

Due to overwhelming support for me getting a new TV (*shakes fist*), I’m seriously keeping my eye out for nice deals… any recommendations? Caveats: I don’t want to go any smaller than 46″, I don’t want a plasma, I need an ethernet port and/or a USB port, and I don’t want to spend TOO much money ($2800 is too much for me).

A friend of mine is coming back to FFXI, so here’s a guide on what has changed in the last few years — Sky had written one for me and I found it insanely helpful. Feel free to pass this on to anyone else who’s thinking of coming back to the game. (Note: This isn’t as complete as I like, I’ll post the one Sky wrote sometime soon.)

I’ll write this assuming people quit during the mass exodus that happened in 2005-2006 when the economy exploded.

Level Sync: This job is a gift from God! Call us again? Level sync lets you avoid the whole level difference bullshit that chased so many people away from the game.

Say your buddy George is level 75, and you’re a wet-behind-the-ears level 10; the two of you can make a party, and George can sync down to your level 10, with his gear adjusted to that level. Now you and George can kill bunnies in the Canyon together, and George will get exp. as if he’s a level 10. He will also lose exp. as a level 10 if he bites the dust, which is good (100-ish exp is better than 2000-ish exp).

Level sync only works with levels 10+.

Field of Valor/Field Manuals: Hey, you know those “kill 10 boars” quests in WoW? Yeah, they moved them here. In all seriousness, in order to encourage people to level in the “classic” zones (original and RotZ), they’ve put some “field manuals” at key places that let you get extra exp for killing a certain set of mobs. For example, the first W. Saruta FoV asks you to kill 7 mobs in the mandragora family — do that, and you get 375 (I think) extra exp on top of that which you got while killing the lil’ buggers. You also get “tabs”, which let you buy buffs and food that let you level easier.

No more naked runs in level capped zones/BCNMs: your gear syncs down as described above. Though this isn’t much of an issue because…

Chains of Promathia zones are now uncapped. Yeah, no more sneaking around sperms in Promyvion there are mightier ones to avoid now. Same with the mission BCs — all uncapped. However, ENMs are still capped, and gear is synced down accordingly.

They moved AV to Vana’diel and all I got was this stupid wyvern skin. They added something called “Campaign” that’s basically an entirely PvE version of battlegrounds; you get exp at the end of each battle based on how you performed (rated on damage taken/given/healing/etc.). More info here:

New classes since RotZ:

- Blue Mage
- Corsair
- Puppetmaster
- Scholar (Everyone must level this. EVERYONE)
- Dancer

Misc stuff:

- No more “renting a room” anymore
- Mog lockers from ToAU, mog satchels if you have the Squeenix token
- More gobbiebags to give you inventory space (and to break your bank)
- Can go in other people’s mog houses if they enable the setting (hawt)
- There are exp rings now that are rechargeable once per week
- You don’t lose your already-recorded outposts if you switch nations
- Scholar is amazing and you should level it
- You can raise a chocobo and have a porta-boco (yay for calling a chocobo in places like, say, Buburimu)
- Lots of teleport rings/earrings
- Easy way from town -> Aht Urhgan after doing an annoying quest
- Abyssea is great, but I wouldn’t even look at it until level 60+

There’s more, but my brain shut down. Have fun, all!

It’s kinda hard to explain this without pictures, but Sky, Myrna and I pulled the stuff out from under the stairs last night, and I’m pleased to say that my theory for how the water got to the other side of the room was spot on.

- Water overflowed from sump, went towards under the stairs because that’s the direction my house is slanted in
- Water hit the vapour shield that’s under the framing
- Vapour shield channelled the water under the framing
- Water went behind the storage room, didn’t stop because it had no reason to
- Water stopped at the lowest point of my basement on that plane, which is where the TV is; had nowhere to go but down along the wall where my art was, all the way down to the side where the couch was, and pooled there

The only thing they were right about is the seepage by my computer desk — that, however, is totally fixable, and the surveying crew should be able to confirm that.

So that’s that. Again, fuck you, Intact Insurance.

Edit: Right, forgot to mention this:

- The Christmas decorations are fine. Yay! The box wasn’t, but that was easily remedied.
- We lost one plank of the flooring, and even then, it was warped, not soaked. This is very encouraging for if this ever happens again.
- We lost a whole section of carpeting, though (the extra stuff that was kept when the house was build), but meh.
