The Good:

  • I managed to stabilize alcedea.net Friday night/Saturday morning. For those of you who want technical details, it was a combination of the MySQL settings below, along with changing a few Apache settings and installing Memcache that got everything to play nice. I also blacklisted a very large spam subnet.

I learned a heck of a lot over the last few weeks, so all in all, this was a really positive experience. … an incredibly frustrating one, but positive nonetheless. Special thanks to those of you who encouraged and helped me through this ordeal!

  • I’m in a really good position for my Silvergate upgrade this weekend. I might be able to shave off a few hours of configuring with the settings I have on the beta site, and now that I know how the conversion process works, it should go a lot faster. I’m still leaving the timeline set to the entire weekend, but I’m hoping that it’ll be up and running again on Saturday morning.
  • I finally got my Secan Aptant for my Ebon Frock! Special thanks to Mielle who got her level 46 butt to the middle of nowhere in Fei’Yin to poke Jenglot with her TH2 goodness. I killed Jenglot about 24 times (I honestly lost count) and I was starting to lose hope.

Myrna and I Synergized my Ebon Frock and the aptant into the Ebon Coat, and it was actually really fun to do Synergy with more than one person, especially when you can coordinate over Teamspeak. I look AMAZING. There isn’t much gear that looks good on me in this game, but that’s one of them. By synthing that, I’ve lost my RP gear for WHM, but I’ll cope.

It would be more logical to turn it into a Furia Coat (the red version) for the extra stats and such, but I don’t like how it looks on me. I’ll have to think long and hard about this one. LOL, maybe I can buy another Ebon Frock and get another Secan Aptant and make a Furia one for plain nuking. *punched*

I think my Argute Loafers (LOL, loafers…) look pretty dope with this set, but the Ebon Boots/whatever they’re called for a mage are… um, pointy, so I’m not sure if I want them. Besides, I’m trying to save up for a Seveneyes.

Pics forthcoming on all this, by the way!

The Bad:

  • My rabbit bit me yesterday. Reese is really laid back so it was really shocking for me… Sky read up on stuff and it’s apparently because I was cleaning his cage while he was still in it (we usually let him run around while we do so). Male rabbits apparently get really territorial as they age, and, well, he IS three years old… still, it was a shock that I don’t care to repeat. He gave me bunny kisses later on so I guess all is good, but I’m still a little nervous.

  • My right eye is twitching. No idea why. I hope I didn’t hurt it with my contacts last week…
  • I need to get the books out of the spare room STAT. I can’t reach my filing cabinet, and I need some stuff out of there so my housing association doesn’t yell at me.
  • My carpet’s starting to unravel in the basement… the thought of having to move ALL THAT FURNITURE downstairs to do the flooring is giving me chest pains. Next year. Neeeeeext year.

The Ugly:

  • They’re raising the level cap in FFXI to 99. This sounds like a good thing; it’s not, and here are the reasons why (warning, large amounts of whining and angsting):

    • I need to level the following subjobs to 49:

      • Red Mage (this has to come first if I’m going to end up Refreshga-ing)

      • Black Mage
      • Samurai
      • Warrior
      • Blue Mage (UGH.)
      • Summoner? Maybe? I don’t see myself needing it, though.
    • I need to level the following jobs to 99
      • Scholar

      • Dragoon
      • White Mage
    • And then what? Will everyone have Accession if they’re subbing SCH? What’s going to happen with the uniqueness of the class?
    • Is my Dynamis group going to still exist? Will I ever get my Argute Pants?
    • I’M NOT DONE YET. I’m terrified I’ll be left in the dust again. I’m in a better position so that I won’t be, and I have awesome awesome friends who’ll help me, but I’m still scared.
    • I was so happy because I was “done” with the “ZOMG MUST LEVEL” aspect, but I feel like everything’s about to fall apart.
    • I’m going to do like Myrna and “stay the course”, so to speak, but I still worry.
  • (And this isn’t specifically an ugly) There are server merges happening, and Mielle will be caught in the Midgard -> Quetzy merging. There are a ton of douchebags on Midgard and they’re understandably worried about the game climate after this happens. So we might have a whole linkshell of RPers moving to Caitsith! This makes me sad (hence the ugly) because this might have to happen, but hey, more friends on Caitsith!

It was a very short break, but I can happily say that it did me a load of good.

A few of my friends take internet breaks, but I’d never taken one myself. I’ll freely admit that I’m tied to the hip to the world wide web, and I actually get agitated if I’m not at the computer at 7:30 PM playing video games.

The break actually started late Monday night. On Tuesday, I logged in at 6:30 PM for Dynamis and logged out immediately afterwards (it was a short one). On Wednesday, I found myself going through withdrawal (!!!), and I basically had to sit away from the computer so I could stop myself from logging in.

Anyways, here are some things I’ve done over the last few days that I didn’t blog or tweet about:

  • Reread all of Dragon Ball (I’m talking the whole 42-volume series that includes Dragon Ball Z)

  • Started editing my NaNoWriMo novel
  • Finished rolling up a character for Sky’s solo campaign for me
  • Started playing in said campaign (I’ll probably have an entry on That Other Blog of Mine for that)
  • Bought flooring for the kitchen and library, finally
  • Bought a new computer chair because my ass wore down the padding, again (this one better last…)
  • Did some research on Drupal (this was the only “internet” thing I did, really)
  • Cleaned my desk (this is an accomplishment, trust me)
  • Cleaned out my download directory (ditto)

It doesn’t sound like much, but keep in mind that on a normal weekday, I play FFXI from 6:00 PM to 11:00 PM (and sometimes, I log in even earlier). Yeah, it’s time to scale back.

So anyways, I’m back. (I’ll spare you the Digimon Revival quote.)

I was a mindless consumer this week, as I had/wanted a lot of things to buy:

  • Both packs of Swordmage D&D Power Cards (yeah, I’m in waaaay deep). It’s good to be able to pull out eight or so cards and be able to see all my abilities at a glance instead of having to flip through two books.

  • Ultra-fine sharpies, because I need to write in errata for said cards. *sigh*
  • Fairy Tail volume 9 (8? 9?), which I haven’t finished reading because it looks like filler.
  • Girl Genius volume 8, because we need more sparkiness in our lives.
  • A new printer, because the back roller died on my poor HP Photosmart 8250. I was skeptical that a $170 printer could do the job of a $275 printer, but it’s working just fine. My old one lasted me six years, so I hope I get that much life out of this. It was also incredibly simple to set up.
  • Two monitor stands, because for the last year or so, they were balanced on top of yoga blocks. I’m serious.
  • A new chair. They never seem to break down on me, but the seat padding invariably wears after a year or so and I feel the hardware through the seat. I’ve now bought the same chair that Sky has, since it’s survived him for this long; it’s got adjustable lumbar support, and it goes up way higher than my old one, which is good (my feet will dangle regardless).

Sky made home-made pizza crust yesterday, so I enjoyed a healthy pizza and I have leftovers for lunch.

So that’s that. Have a good week, everyone!

David Eddings died on Tuesday.

I was shocked, really. I didn’t think he was that aged (77), yet he really wasn’t old at all. The sad part is that I found out on Twitter, of all places, when I looked at the Trending Topics and saw Eddings’ name in the list.

I really enjoyed the Belgariad and the Malloreon when I grew up (I didn’t like the Elenium), and I think I’ve read them a million times. Ironically, I don’t think I have the entire series… I’ll have to check. I feel like a vulture for wanting to get the books now, though…

If you haven’t read those two series, please do so… you won’t regret it.

RIP, good sir.

This manga.

I’d heard rumours that they were bringing out some of the Zelda manga here, but I didn’t think it’d be so soon. I’ll admit to having squeed (shut up, Hunter) when I grabbed it, but only because I thought it was the Oracle of Seasons manga — I didn’t even know they’d made an Ocarina of Time adaptation!

The manga is so cute that it makes my teeth hurt. The mangaka (it’s two ladies working under a male pen name, IIRC) don’t seem to like spiders, either, and Gohma looks more like a beatle than anything else (much to my relief). Child Link is SO CUTE, and Sky had to laugh when I turned red when they showed the full-page art of him all grown up (shut up, Sky). They made Zelda absolutely adorable, too.

The second volume’s out now so I’m going to use Ooke’s Christmas present to us to order it. I can’t wait for Ages and Seasons to come out!

I did buy other books, too. Jamie at Home, which is awesome but it’s unfortunately the US version (as I saw when looking up his Courgettes Carbonara recipe). I also bought Weight Training for Dummies (shush) and Runner’s World Complete Book of Beginning Running, which is okay but I’m annoyed at the “here’s all the excuses you could possibly make for not running, now shut up and do it anyways” section.
